Abstract
The “Rapper Mortality Pipeline” is a recurring problem in the rap world, where artists often face early deaths due to issues like substance abuse and violence. This trend, linked to challenges like tough upbringings, pressure to maintain a certain image, and the rapid rise to fame, not only affects individual artists but also their communities and the music industry. It underscores how rap music, with its significant influence, shapes the lives and perspectives of listeners, especially young people, emphasizing the need to address the complex challenges faced by artists in this genre.

One issue that I have always found interesting is the “rapper mortality pipeline,” where both emerging and established rap artists face untimely deaths due to things such as substance abuse, violence, or mental health challenges. This has been prominent within the rap community for decades, dating back to the deaths of Tupac and Biggie. These deaths can range from a variety of factors, and it’s constant reoccurrence has drawn significant attention within the music industry and the public. It appears that nearly every year, we witness the tragic passing of a rapper, a phenomenon that is notably less prevalent in other music genres. This can be attributed to many rappers coming from disadvantaged backgrounds which can lead to a higher likelihood of committing criminal activities. Having to live a “street” or “gangster” lifestyle to maintain a certain level of creditability or image. Or being exposed to a significant about of wealth and fame so quickly that it can lead to having mental health or substance issues that often go unchecked. The effects of the high death rate among rap artists extend well beyond the individual artist and can impact the communities that they are from and the industry as a whole. Which highlights the power and reach of the rap/hip-hop genre, which not only reflects but also shapes the lives and attitudes of its listeners, especially young people. For example, when rapper Nipsey Hustle died in 2019 many people painted murals of him near his Marathon clothing store and more efforts were put forth to end gang violence and bring more positive change to the community.
